Sami Porter
Ceramic Artist

I am an emerging South Australian Ceramic Artist who also combines natural found-objects into contemporary sculptural works, expressing a dialogue of interconnectedness, recognition and imagination between our existence and that found in the hidden and microbiological aspects of nature.
I am profoundly inspired by natural processes, particularly events that are hidden or overlooked, and have gravitated toward working with natural found-objects to push my concept and invention. I also engage with notions of fantasy and the surreal, with the manipulation of forms to give them an alternate meaning of becoming something other than it once was. I have a strong interest in Romantic Nature Philosophy, and both my practice and conceptual direction have become closely connected with Process Philosophy and the notion of life in continual transition.
My key passion and technique has become the use and exploration of the crystalline glaze. It is a glaze that grows visible crystal structures under precise conditions, and I have been experimenting with it to emphasise notions organic process and growth. The use of the crystalline glaze is essential to my work, embodying the essence of organic process through its ability to grow in the kiln, and transforming into a world of wonder all of its own.
I have home studio in Adelaide, South Australia; where I practice my art and raise 2 small people.
